Plant growth medium consisting of a felt mat formed from natural cellulose fibres in which an alkene-unsatd. monomer, pref. acrylonitrile, has been polymerised in-situ. Easy transplantation of saplings. Cellulose pulp fibres are suspended in demineralised water and the pH is adjusted to 3.5 with H2SO4. Acrylonitrile is added. The mixture is refluxed for 10 mins. to drive off the air, then ferroammoniumsulphate hexahydrate and 25% H2O2 are added. The mixt. is refluxed for 45 mins., then the unreacted acrylonitrile is distilled off. The polymer-modified fibres are taken out of the reaction mixture and dried into blocks and shapes.
