[Also in Divisions C3 and C5] The invention comprises compounds of the Formula (I) where R<SP>1</SP> is a tertiary alkyl C 4-12 radical, R<SP>11</SP> is a hydrogen atom or a straight or branchedchain alkyl C 2-4 radical and R<SP>111</SP> is a straight or branched-chain alkyl C 2-4 radical. They are prepared by ortho-alkylating diphenylamine with a straight or branched-chain C 2-4 olefin in the presence of a catalyst comprising aluminium and reacting the ortho-alkylated diphenylamine thus formed with a secondary C 4-12 olefin in the presence of a Bronsted acid or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. When R<SP>1</SP>=R<SP>111</SP>= t-C 4 H 9 and R<SP>11</SP>=H or t-C 4 H 9 , the compound of Formula (I) may be prepared by reacting diphenylamine with isobutylene in the presence of a Bransted acid or a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The compounds of Formula (I) act as antioxidants for example to aldehydes, e.g. nheptaldehyde and unsaturated fatty acid esters, e.g. methyl oleate and vicinoleic acid. |
