Methods for obtaining a product comprising a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C10 alcohol from a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C10 carboxylic acid. The method comprises contacting a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C10 carboxylic acid with a gaseous composition and a Chlostridia species to produce a substituted or unsubstituted C3 to C10 alcohol under an anaerobic environment.
