A wire electrode which comprises a core (10) constituted of brass and a surface layer (20) having a thickness of 5 µm or larger. The surface layer is formed by: subjecting a brass wire on which a zinc coating layer has been formed by electroplating to a heat treatment to thereby form a diffusion layer which consists only of a beta phase formed by the diffusion of zinc contained in the zinc coating layer into the brass wire; and thereafter drawing the heat-treated wire to thereby reduce the diameter. The brass wire is continuously heat-treated evenly in a given constant-temperature atmosphere while causing the brass wire to run at a constant speed in a horizontal direction in a heating oven (40). |
