The present invention provides a strand for combining into an optical fiber unit, the strand comprising a flat sea-island type colored composite strand, wherein (1) the sea component of the flat sea-island type colored composite strand has a melting initiation temperature of 100ºC or higher and a melting peak temperature of 120-150ºC, (2) the flat sea-island type colored composite strand has a width of 0.5-3.0 mm and a thickness of 0.15 mm or less, and (3) the flat sea-island type colored composite strand has a degree of thermal shrinkage through 3-hour heating at 100ºC of 1.0% or less. The strand has improved coloration, enables the optical fiber cores to retain the shape thereof, and does not press the optical fiber cores. The strand does not stick to adjoining combining strands or optical fiber cores.
