<p>A crane such as a gantry crane 101 has a hoist 113 capable of lateral movement and for performing a lifting operation, a controller 125, a coupling 119a-d attached to the hoist 113 for connection to a load and a height sensor (not shown) for monitoring the height of the coupling, the controller inhibiting lateral movement of the hoist 113 when the height sensor detects that the coupling 119a-d is below a pre-defined operating height H1 or that the coupling 119a-d is outside one or more pre-defined operating height ranges. Operation of the crane 101 may be inhibited by reducing operating the speed of the hoist 113, stopping the hoist 113, reducing a lateral travel speed of the hoist 113 or permitting only incremental lateral movements of the hoist 113. A further sensor 127 may be provided for detecting the presence of a person in a safety region 129 such that operation of the crane 101 is inhibited when the sensor 127 detects a person in the safety region 129. The sensor 127 may be a thermal imaging camera or a motion detection sensor. A load sensor may be provided such that operation of the crane 101 is not inhibited when no load is applied to the hoist 113. A load may be held stationary for a short period after an initial lift to allow any swing to abate.</p> |
