The system has a transmitter (12) and two ultrasonic receivers (14, 16) coupled to a unit for determining a distance between the transmitter and the receivers, where the transmitters and receivers are placed freely with respect to each other. A connection between the transmitter and a measurement probe (4) allows determining a position of the probe by triangulation. An independent claim is also included for a method for mapping a surface using a method for determining a location of a measurement probe on a zone to be analyzed.
