The method involves determining a minimum temperature (T1soll) for a preset methane conversion for a catalystor. Temperature (T1ist) of the catalystor is determined. A torque reserve of an internal-combustion engine is determined and provided for temporary heating of the catalystor when the temperature is below the minimum temperature of a temperature difference between the temperature and the minimum temperature. The torque reserve is determined for heating a precatalystor. An independent claim is also included for a device for exhaust gas after treatment of an internal-combustion engine.
