[Also in Division B8] To prevent breakage and/or premature deshirring of hollow stick 10 of shirred casing material e.g. for sausages is sheathed and lined with flexible, reticulated tubular binding 12. In one embodiment (Figs. 2-5) the binding 12 is applied by feeding the free end 28 of a binding supply 18 through a hollow mandrel 16 and over the outer surface of the stick which is mounted on a shirring mandrel 14. The stick 10 is subsequently slid off the mandrel 14 onto the hollow mandrel 16 to allow the binding 12 to line its interior 11. The tubing 18 forming the lining is cut adjacent the stick end 24 to form a second end 26 to the binding whereupon the two ends 28, 26 are pulled to tension the binding 12, a clip then being applied therearound. In a second embodiment a cylinder (30, Figs. 8-10) coaxially surrounds the hollow mandrel 16 so that the tubing 18 may be applied over the outer and inner surfaces of the stick simultaneously. The binding 12 may be formed of knitted, woven or braided fabric, perforated thermoplastics film or non-woven net e.g. polythene.
