The present invention provides an optical transmission system which enables a conversion between a video camera image and a return image without adopting a special viewfinder. The optical transmission system transmits an optical signal between a camera adaptor which is arranged in a video camera side and a base station which is arranged in a position separated from the video camera. The camera adaptor converts a first electrical signal including a video camera image signal from the video camera into a first optical signal and transmits the first optical signal to the base station. The base station outputs the first electrical signal to the outside by receiving the first optical signal and converting the first optical signal into the first electrical signal and transmits a second optical signal by converting a second electrical signal including a return image signal from a switcher into the second optical signal. The camera adaptor receives the second optical signal and converts the second optical signal into the second electrical signal and the video camera image signal and the return image signal are all digital image signals. The camera adaptor includes: a control signal input unit which receives the input of a control signal including a return signal; an image selecting unit which outputs the video camera image signal of the first electrical signal or the return image signal of the second electrical signal based on the state of the return signal; and a control signal separating unit which outputs the control signal except for the return signal from the control signal.
