A method and apparatus for implementing instrumentation code within application program code. The method comprises, within a software development tool, defining at least one instrumentation point within the application program code, associating at least one instrumentation code object with the at least one defined instrumentation point, the at least one instrumentation code object comprising instrumentation code, and causing the instrumentation code of the at least one instrumentation code object associated with the at least one instrumentation point to be incorporated into the application program code prior to compilation of the application program code.
