PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To stably and accurately perform focus detection with respect to movement of an image on a screen even in an imaging device which performs accumulation control in a line exposure system. SOLUTION: A focus detector comprises: an imaging device having a plurality of charge storage type pixels to receive luminous flux via an optical system; accumulation control means for simultaneously performing charge accumulation control to a first pixel row arranged in a first direction on the imaging device from among the pixels, and for successively performing the accumulation control to a second pixel row arranged in a second direction crossing with the first direction; and focus detection means for performing focus detection of the optical system based on output from the first pixel row and the second pixel row. The focus detection means performs the focus detection by using the output from the first pixel row (S130), and performs the focus detection by using the output from the second pixel row (S150), if reliable result of the focus detection cannot be obtained (S140).
