[Problem] To provide an optical device which converts randomly polarized light having a large etendue into light that is composed only of a polarized component in a specific direction and has a small etendue. [Solution] An optical device which is provided with a light guide layer that has a periodic structure in a first surface and a metal layer that is provided on the first surface. The light guide layer comprises: at least one incident surface through which light enters into the light guide layer; and at least one exit surface which is other than the incident surface and the first surface, and through which light within the light guide layer exits from the light guide layer.
