An apparatus for pumping or compressing a fluid comprises a housing, an inlet, an impeller, and an outlet. The housing has a front wall, a rear wall and side walls interconnecting the front and rear walls to define a fluid rotation chamber. The front and rear walls of the housing are substantially circular in plan view so that the housing is substantially cylindrical. The fluid rotation chamber is substantially square or rectangular in cross section along at least a portion of its axial length. The front and rear walls join the side wall with a curve having a radius of less than 10 mm for encouraging solid-body rotation of the fluid as a fluid vortex in the chamber and the rotation of the impeller causing fluid entering the apparatus through the inlet to rotate within the fluid rotation chamber prior to exiting the apparatus through the outlet. 13 - |
