1526001 Moulding foamed panels EXXON RESEARCH & ENG CO 16 Jan 1976 [3 March 1975] 1715/76 Heading B5A A foamed, perhaps fibre reinforced, panel is made by moving a shallow mould platen 10 past a mixer 16, which deposits a foaming precursor into the platen, and into a press having an upper platen in the form of a plate 15 which is lowered to close the platen 10 during foaming. After foaming, the press is opened and the platen withdrawn to its initial position for removal of the foamed panel. The plate 15 is driven by hydraulic operators 17 (or 26) each connected through universal couplings (see Fig. 9, not shown) to I beams 15b, 15a, themselves connected to the plate. The actuators are operated in such a way that the plate is lowered progressively into contact with the platen 10 from one corner to the opposite corner and is raised in the same way. This ensures that there is no entrapment of air during closure and no destruction of the panel surface during opening in view of the peeling action of the plate. The platen 10 is carried by a wheeled carriage 11, made up of I beams 10a, 10b, which is reciprocated along rails 12 by a motor driven cable system 24. The platen 10 may be lined with a plastics sheet and an upper sheet may be applied as the platen moves into the press by a reel 20. |
