An external input controlling method and a broadcast receiving apparatus applying the same are provided. The external input controlling method sets a call word of an external input device which is connected through an external input terminal, matches the call word with the external input terminal which corresponds to the call word, stores the call word, determines whether the call word is included in a user voice or not by recognizing the user voice if the user voice is inputted, and displays an image which is received from the external input terminal which corresponds to the call word by activating the external input terminal which corresponds to the call word in case the call word is included in the user voice. By the aforementioned, a user is able to control the external input terminal more intuitively using the voice recognition by setting a familiar word as the call word.
