The method involves calculating a data representing evolution over time of an energy consumption index between two moments. The evolution is compared with installed total power data stored in association with a lighting circuit (28) and representing total electric power absorptive by the circuit when its consumers operate at a face value. A signal or defect data representing detection of defect to center of the circuit is generated and emitted or stored in case of non-correspondence between the evolution and the installed total power. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a module for monitoring defects of a lighting circuit (2) an electrical lighting cabinet.
