<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a gas sensor element in which a protection layer may be prevented from peeling off while retaining a function of the protection layer. <P>SOLUTION: In a method for manufacturing a gas sensor element, formation of a protection layer includes: a protection layer forming material preparing step of preparing a protection layer forming material 20 including ceramic particles 21, burn-out particles 22 to be burnt out through baking, a solvent of an organic solvent and an organic binder resin 23 soluble in the solvent; a coating step of coating the protection layer forming material 20 on an outer surface 171 of a diffusion resistance layer 17 of an element main part 10; and a baking step of baking the protection layer forming material 20 for forming a protection layer 2.
