<p>A support or side plate (14, Fig. 1) suitable for a heat exchanger comprises an elongate plate member having a periphery defined in a first direction by a pair of longitudinal edges (16, Fig. 1) and in a second direction by opposing upper 20 and lower 18 surfaces. The plate member includes at least one expansion gap or aperture 26 defining longitudinally spaced plate sections 30, 32. At least two bridging arms 34 span the expansion gap 26 and interconnect the spaced plate sections 30, 32. The arms include first and second arm sections 36, 38 angled relative to the longitudinal axis that are connected at their distal ends to form an apex such that the bridging arms are substantially v-shaped and do not extend outwardly of the periphery of the plate member. The arm sections move under longitudinal loading to allow the expansion gap to vary in width during thermal expansion and contraction. A v-shaped notch 46 may be formed in the plate member.</p> |
