The metal-cutting tool comprises a body (100), a cutting insert (96), and a strap (105) which retains the insert. The assembly passes through a hole which is nominally big enough for the body alone. The body has a cutting extremity which is shaped to provide bearing surfaces (102a,b; 103a,b) for the insert and the latter fits (99,101) onto the bearing surfaces to be retained by the strap. The insert may have two opposed cutting surfaces (97,98) together with two distinct support surfaces, one or other support face contacting body bearing surfaces whichever cutting surface is in use. The insert can be stepped and elongated with up to a 20% overhang, being suited to transverse-feed turning operations and those using slides.
