A refuse container has a container assembly. The container assembly has a bin, a lid rotatably coupled to the bin, a locking mechanism. The locking mechanism has latch and a detent. The latch has a handle and is moveable between a locked position and an unlocked position. The detent acts between the bin and the lid and co-operates with the latch so as to effect locking of the lid to the bin. The latch is configured to move from the locked position to the unlocked position in response to application of an unlocking force to the handle. The lid is configured to move from the closed position to the open position in response to an application of a lid-opening force to the handle. The unlocking force and the lid-opening force include a horizontal component and a vertical component. |
