The method involves performing braking operations by periodically measuring thickness (E) of a brake disk stack (40), where the thickness of the brake disk stack reaches a predetermined value. A maintenance alert is generated. A setback pusher (31) is caused to a retracted position in response to the maintenance alert. An extension is mounted into an end of a plunger. The braking operations are continued with the extension in a place. An additional extension is assembled at an end of the existing extension. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a brake actuator for a brake of an undercarriage of an aircraft (2) a wheel and brake assembly.
