The unit has an industrial truck for removably supporting a handling container (5) by gravity. A sliding trolley is mounted on a guide rail system (16). A storage tank (4) for storing fuel assemblies is distinct from a reactor vessel (11) and filled with liquid metal and arranged below another guide rail system (70) on level of a transfer position (P4). A container transfer unit transfers the container to the truck in another transfer position (P3) when another industrial truck (8.1) is in an extraction position (P1), and vice versa. The transfer unit transfers the container to the former truck in the former transfer position until reaching an immersion position inside the tank, and vice versa. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for implementing an installation unit for handling fuel assemblies (2) a nuclear power plant.
