PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a parking assisting device and method, easily parking a vehicle in a target parking position even when the stop position for the parking is arbitrarily determined. SOLUTION: An image of the periphery of one's own vehicle is picked up by cameras 2 installed in a plurality of positions of a vehicle body. The image pickup signals obtained by the image pickup are converted into image signals from the viewpoints with the camera optical axis being orthogonal to the road surface by a viewpoint conversion unit 11B, and synthesized to prepare an overhead image. A guide index for assisting the parking for a driver is set in the prepared overhead image by a plotting control unit 20B. The guide index set in the prepared overhead image is superposed by a superposed image synthesis unit 13B to prepare a superposed image, and the prepared superposed image is displayed on a monitor 8.
