The invention relates to a method for the production of alcohols by vapor phase hydrogenation of carboxylic acids having formula R-COOH, wherein R represents aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radicals or the esters thereof at a high temperature and pressure in the presence of catalysts containing as hydrogenating components oxides of the elements of the fourth main group and/or sub-groups or consisting thereof, wherein hydrogenation is carried out without adding alcohols that are suitable as hydrogen carriers at temperatures ranging from 250 DEG C to 400 DEG C and pressures in the range of 25 bar to 60 bar.
