An electrolyser 1 which comprises inner tubular electrodes (figure 3, 33, 34) and outer tubular electrodes (figure 3, 30, 31, 32) co-axially disposed to form an annular cavity through which, in use, the electrolyte flows is described. The tubular electrodes are disposed as a succession of electrodes the inner electrodes are inserted into the outer electrodes so that the polarity of the inner and outer tubular electrodes alternates along the flow path of the electrolyte. The polarity of the portions of the outer electrodes is opposite to the polarity of the corresponding portions of the inner electrodes. Electrical connections (figure 2, 26, 28, 29) are provided between a power source and the electrolyser with further electrical connections being located between adjacent lengths of tubular electrodes. The electrolyser also possesses electrically insulating members 16, 17, 18 on the outside of said outer tubular electrodes which extend along the length of said tubular electrodes, between said electrical connections. The electrodes may form a serpentine path with a number of turns 14, 15. The electrolyser may be used to produce hypochlorite and hydrogen. |
