A liquid crystal display device is provided. The liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate which is separated from the first substrate and faces the first substrate, a liquid crystal layer which is arranged between the first substrate and the second substrate, a first electrode which is arranged between the first substrate and the liquid crystal layer and includes a first slit, and a second electrode which is arranged between the liquid crystal layer and the second substrate and includes a second slit. The liquid crystal layer includes an achiral smectic liquid crystal between 1 and 50wt%; and an extra nematic liquid crystal.
