A technique for enhancing access class barring for machine-type communication (MTC) devices. A wireless communication network defines access classes (ACs) for wireless devices, in particular MTC devices. Each AC has associated with it access class barring information determining under what conditions a wireless device is allowed to access the network and a set of preambles permitted for random access by the wireless device. The network assigns each wireless device to an access class, for example on the basis that the device is an MTC device, and the access class barring information for each access class is preset or broadcast. The wireless device determines whether it is allowed to access the network based on the access class barring information; and if so, transmits one of the permitted RA preambles. The selection of preambles made available to the wireless device, and/or the wireless device's choice of preamble, may imply additional information to expedite the RA procedure. |
