During lock-up transition from a lock-up clutch released state to an engaged state, torque assist using a motor generator mechanically connected to an output shaft of an engine via a belt is prohibited. When a torque assist implementing condition is satisfied when lock-up transition is not taking place, torque assist using the motor generator is permitted.
