The apparatus has a matrix display (40) with a controllable light-emitting element, an evaluation device (50) and a measuring unit (M) for measuring drive signals (I). The evaluation device is designed, such that the control information and the measured drive signals are evaluated to recover the display information. The additional individually controllable light-emitting elements in the matrix display are arranged line by line or in standard columns. The drive signals of each individually controllable light-emitting elements are determined directly or multiplexed by the measuring unit. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a retrofit kit for a matrix display with individually controllable light-emitting elements; and (2) a method for recovering a display image of a matrix display with individually controllable light-emitting elements.
