Embodiments of the present invention provide a method and an apparatus for transmitting and receiving a client signal, and relate to the technical field of communications. The method comprises: mapping a client signal into a channel of a parallel transmission frame, the parallel transmission frame comprising at least two channels, being used for adding overhead to the mapped channel of the parallel transmission frame to form transmission channels of the parallel transmission frame, and a bit rate of each channel of the parallel transmission frame being fixed; modulating the transmission channels of the parallel transmission frame to an optical carrier of a same optical fiber, and sending the modulated optical carrier. The present invention, by defining a parallel transmission frame structure, maps the client signals, especially multi-channel client signals to the transmission channels of the parallel transmission frame, and modulates the transmission channels onto the optical carrier in the same optical fiber, which greatly simplifies the processing complexity adaptive to the multi-channel parallel client signals, and prevents the existing processing flow of "first multiplexing, the distributing, and re-multiplexing ", thereby simplifying the process of signal adaptation.
