The method involves detecting a surface region of the clothing (5) by a scanning device and determining the degree of soiling by the visual contrast between clean and polluted surface regions of the clothing, by an evaluation unit. The surface region of the clothing is exposed to light, and the light emanating from the surface region in response to the illumination light such as UV light, is used for the evaluation of visual response of light contrast. The warp and/or the weft yarns are comprised of luminescent material such as UV-luminescent material. An independent claim is included for clothing used for transporting fibrous web through drying section of fibrous web production machine.
