PURPOSE: A system for sensing a lateral airbag for a vehicle is provided to dually spread the airbag by utilizing a signal of a passive sensor and a sensing member with an active algorithm to detect the collision. CONSTITUTION: A system for sensing a lateral airbag for a vehicle comprises a collision sensor, an electronic control unit, and an active sensor. The electronic control unit receives an image signal or a distance signal delivered from an active sensor which is installed in the lateral surface of the vehicle and predicts the collision possibility of an inflicting object closing to the later surface of the vehicle based on the image signal or the distance signal(S110). The electronic control unit spreads the lateral airbag if the collision is determined after colliding based on the fail-safe result and the collision is predicted before colliding when the inflicting object collides.
