The gate driver (10) has a control input for receiving a control signal (V-IN), where an amplified output signal (V-D) is provided by an output. The amplified output signal is supplied for controlling the gate of a switch (20). A control device has an adaptive incrementer and a lookup table, and is connected between the control input and the output. An adaptive pulse sequence is generated by the control device, and is varied based on a characteristic of the control signal. A number sequence is generated by the incrementer, where a slew rate of the switch is adjusted by the sequence values. An independent claim is included for a system for switching a high power load.
