The present invention relates to an embedded system and a method for detecting malfunction thereof which can detect malfunction of an external clock source supplying a clock to a micro controller unit, without adding an additional device. The embedded system of the present invention includes: an external clock source; and a micro controller unit including a phase locked circuit dividing a clock supplied from the external clock source and a comparison part detecting the malfunction of the external clock source depending on the result of judging whether the divided clock frequency is included in the error range established by a clock frequency of an internal clock source. According to the embedded system and the method for detecting malfunction thereof of the present invention, it is possible to detect the malfunction of an external crystal supplying a clock to the micro controller unit without adding an additional device; circuit size and power consumption can be maintained because the additional device is not added; additional costs can be prevented; and it is possible to detect not only frequency malfunction equal to or less than a reference value but also frequency malfunction equal to or above the reference value.
