Methods for producing silk-like lustre on vegetable fibrous material by coating

Vegetable textile materials in the form of fabric or yarn acquire a silk-like lustre, without material loss of softness, by coating or impregnating with solutions in volatile solvents of cellulose ethers or of cellulose xanthic acid esters or of N-substituted thiourethanes of cellulose, and then subjecting the coated or impregnated materials to a treatment adapted to cause the materials to shrink. Pyridine, or aqueous pyridine, are suitable solvents for use in the preparation of the solutions of the cellulose ether &c., and to such solutions may be added one or other of the substances that can be obtained according to the process of Specification 25246/11, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], for example, 2-oxytrimethylene-1:3-sulphide, or other softening agents or plasticizers. In examples, cotton sateen is coated with solutions of cellulose ethyl either in benzene-alcohol or aqueous pyridine, or of cellulose benzyl ether in pyridine, or of the cellulose xanthic acid methyl or ethyl esters of Specification 252,654, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], in aqueous pyridine, or of diethyl-, penta-methylene-, phenyl-, methylphenyl-, m-diphenylene, phenylmethyl-, or benzylthio-urethane of cellulose, for example, as prepared according to Specifications 231,801 or 248,246, [both in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], in aqueous pyridine; to the solutions there may be added as softening agents, o-tricresyl-phosphate, glycerine, dichlorether mono- or dithioglycerine or mono- or di-ethylene glycol, 2-oxymethylene-1:3-sulphide, or another sulphide or a mercaptan of a di- or polyvalent alcohol; and the material is shrunk by treatment with caustic soda solutions of strengths varying from 15-50 per cent, or with a concentrated solution of sodium sulphide. In the solutions of the cellulose compounds, a gas, for example, air, hydrogen or nitrogen, may be emulsified or dissolved under pressure. The materials treated, may be cotton, flax, linen, hemp, ramie fibre and jute. Specifications 248,994, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], and 357,190 also are referred to.
