PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rearrange light output of a solid-state laser diode so that it is more compatible with symmetric optics and is better suited for efficient use with optical fibers.SOLUTION: A solid-state laser 12 is energized to emit, along an optical axis OA, an input laser light beam 24 that has a first etendue aspect ratio R. The optical invariant of the beam 24 with respect to a fast axis FA direction is less than half the optical invariant with respect to a slow axis SA direction orthogonal to the fast axis direction. The beam 24 is collimated through cylindrical lenses 15 and 14 and directed to a bisecting reflective surface 72 having an edge 73, and the reflective surface 72 splits the beam path into an undeviated beam path 42 and a deviated beam path 44. A folding reflective surface 76 redirects the deviated beam path 44 toward the reflective surface 72, so that the redirected deviated beam path is optically parallel with the undeviated beam path and is displaced with respect to the fast axis direction to form an output beam 30 having a second etendue aspect ratio Rnot equal to R. |
