An avatar generation application server receives face image data and acquires feature point data for the object corresponding to each part of the face, compares the feature point data with a feature point database stored in a storage section, and selects the avatar part image most similar to the object. Then, a user terminal device generates an avatar image on the basis of the selected part image and displays the avatar image on a display section. The user edits the displayed avatar image, if necessary, and finalizes the image. In response to this finalization, the avatar generation application server updates the feature point database so as to add information indicating the relationship between the avatar part image and the object when the image is finalized.
