PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved methods of making permanent magnets such as Nd-Fe-B permanent magnets, in which addition of chemical elements improves magnetic properties of sintered Nd-Fe-B based magnets, based on the known fact that the coercivity is greatly influenced by morphology of grain boundary phases between NdFB crystal grains.SOLUTION: A method of making a permanent magnet includes a step of bringing a powder into contact with a metal-containing vapor to form a coating on the powder. The alloy powder contains neodymium, iron, and boron. The metal-containing vapor includes a component selected from the group consisting of dysprosium, terbium, iron and alloys thereof. A permanent magnet is formed from the coated powder by compaction, sintering and subsequent heat treatment. |
