[Class 38 (iii).] Driving and braking controllers 1, 2 respectively of a multiple unit train control system are actuated by independent oil-operated and return-biased pistons 3, 4, the former moving in a cylinder having a normally closed admission valve 15 and a normally open escape valve 16, and the latter moving in a cylinder having a single normally open admission and escape valve 17. The valves are electrically controlled by a master controller 20 or 21, and means are provided for creating and releasing the oil pressure, further means being provided by which the master controller causes the valves, and the pressure releasing means to operate in correct sequence. In the position of the controller 20 shown, the valves 15, 17 are closed, and the valve 16 is open. Upon movement of the controller 20 to position r3, the valve 16 is closed and the valve 15 is opened, so that oil under the pressure of a spring 9 is forced to operate the controller 1, which may be held in a given position by returning the controller 20 to position r2, and thereby closing the valve 15. By returning the controller 20 to position r1 the valve 15 is closed, the valve 16 is opened, and a solenoid 11 is energized to compress the spring 9, and restore the oil pressure, by drawing the oil through a non-return valve 36. When the controller 20 is moved to position b3, the valve 17 is opened, and the controller 2 is operated, and is held in any desired position by moving the controller 20 to position b2 and thereby closing the valve 17. For emergency braking, the controller 20 is moved to position b4, in which a coil 50 is energized by current from the motor I acting as a generator, and assists the spring 9. To restore the oil pressure the controller 20 is moved to position b1. The valve 17 is arranged to be closed by energization of its coil through a contact 56 on the controller 1 when the latter is in an operating position, and is arranged to open on failure of voltage. The controllers 1, 2 are operated through quick-stepping devices 38, 39. The speed of movement of the controller 1 is influenced by a band-brake 58, operated by a main current coil 57, and the controller 2 is regulated in accordance with the braking current from the motor II, acting as a generator, by means of a coil 27 acting on the valve 17. The oil pressure may be produced by an axledriven compressor, or by a motor-driven pump, in which case the solenoid 11 actuates a valve.
