The method involves placing a perishable component of an ink kit (12) in a banknote accommodating container i.e. cash box (10). Data with information about date of expiry of the component are stored in a memory region of a memory element (20) of the container. The data are manually input in form of a code into a device e.g. docking station, automatic safe cashpoint, automated teller machine and consolidator, for handling banknotes by an input unit i.e. keyboard. The date of expiry is determined from the code by a control unit (18) using a preset algorithm.
