This vehicle brake system comprises a braking mode switching mechanism for selectively implementing a mode in which braking force is generated dependently on the pressure of a pressure-regulated operating fluid, and a mode in which the braking force is generated dependently on both the operational ability of a driver and the pressure of the pressure-regulated operating fluid, and is configured so as to appropriately perform switching between the modes according to the state of the vehicle brake system. This pressure regulator is able to regulate the pressure of the operating fluid by the movement of a movable unit, and the movable unit is directly supported by a housing. Consequently, in this pressure regulator, the pressure regulation of the operating fluid by smooth motion is ensured.
