PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a lighting device 2 that identifies the type of a lamp LA connected to the lighting device 2 and outputs a voltage and current depending on the connected lamp LA.SOLUTION: The lighting device 2 includes: an inverter circuit 30 for converting a DC voltage to an AC voltage to feed to the connected lamp LA; a starting capacitor C2 connected via the lamp LA; a discrimination circuit 61 for identifying the type of the lamp by whether a voltage supplied to the starting capacitor C2 is an AC voltage or a DC voltage; and an inverter circuit control circuit 51 for changing an oscillation frequency of the inverter circuit 30 on the basis of the result of identification by the discrimination circuit 61. The identification of the connected lamp LA as a discharge lamp LA1 or an LED lamp LA2 can switch the operation of the inverter circuit 30 in accordance with the connected lamp LA.
