PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a steering control device and a steering control method of a vehicle by which a start of sudden steering of a steerable wheel can be suppressed.SOLUTION: A steering control device includes: a steering motor 2 which steers a steering wheel W; a backup clutch 6 capable of switching an opened state in which a torque transmission path between a steering operation element 28 operated by a driver and the steering wheel W is mechanically separated and a fastened state in which the torque transmission path is mechanically connected; and a steering motor control part 42 which causes the steering motor 2 to output steering torque corresponding to a target steering angle with respect to an operation of the steering operation element 28 while the backup clutch 6 is switched to the opened state, wherein the steering motor control part 42, when a steering angle of the steering operation element 28 exceeds a maximum steering angle preset on the basis of a neutral position, interrupts an output of the steering torque from the steering motor 2, and the steering motor control part 42 reopens an output of the steering torque from the steering motor 2 when the steering angle of the steering operation element 28 which exceeds the maximum steering angle starts to decrease to the neutral position side. |
