A catalyst comprises sintered iron oxide particles of fluidizable size. The size is such that at least 50 per cent of the particles lie within the range 60-400 mesh per linear inch. Sintering is effected in a reducing atmosphere at 1200-1600 DEG F. or in an inert atmosphere at 1600-2700 DEG F.; reduction of the oxide may, however, precede or follow the sintering treatment. A promoter-solution of potassium carbonate added during the preparation of the catalyst, may be present. Red iron oxide is the specified oxide. The catalyst is used for synthesizing hydrocarbons from hydrogen/carbon monoxide mixtures, but it may also be used for hydrogenating unsaturable hydrocarbons, synthesizing ammonia, and the halogenation of certain hydrocarbons.ALSO:Sintered red iron oxide in particles of fluidizable size is used as a catalyst for the synthesis of hydrocarbons from carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Sintering may be effected in an inert or reducing atmosphere. Reaction temperature is 60 DEG F. and the pressure is 250 lbs. per square inch. |
