A method for treating electrophoresis gels containing a protein, such as methods for staining electrophoresis gels to detect and/or quantify a protein. The method comprises (a) providing a sealed microwavable bag containing a protein treatment solution; (b) opening the microwavable bag; and (c) contacting an electrophoresis gel containing a protein with the protein treatment solution; wherein the protein treatment solution is microwaved prior to and/or during contact with the electrophoresis gel containing a protein. The method may further comprise the steps of (d) resealing the microwavable bag such that it contains both the protein treatment solution and the electrophoresis gel containing a protein; and (e) microwaving the sealed microwavable bag containing the protein treatment solution and the electrophoresis gel containing a protein. Preferably the protein treatment solution is a protein-complexing dye such as Coomassie dye. The protein treatment solution may contain a detergent removal system, preferably a cyclic polysaccharide such as cyclodextrin. The use of a microwavable bag in a method of contacting an electrophoresis gel containing a protein with a protein treatment solution is provided. |
