PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a simple, efficient and highly versatile method for producing a compound having a CF<SB>2</SB>CF<SB>2</SB>-linking group useful as a functional material such as a liquid crystal material etc. SOLUTION: This method for producing a compound (3) having a tetrafluoroethylene backbone of a specific structure is provided by reacting a compound (1) having a specific structure with a compound (2) in the presence of a metal by a coupling reaction.
