The contactor (1) has a coil core designed as a permanent magnet, and a control unit (2) for adjusting two or multiple various direct voltages. A switching armature (7) is movable between a holding position and a resetting position to open and close a switching contact (10). One direct voltage is an exciter voltage for generation of exciting current, which enables coil force to move a switching armature from the return position to the holding position. Another direct voltage is a cut-off voltage for generation of cut-off current, which is directed opposite to the exciting current.
