The present invention relates to a method for preparing a material used in a container for conveying, temporarily storing, or permanently storing spent nuclear fuels which are produced from a nuclear research reactor or a nuclear power reactor. In particular, the present invention provides a method for preparing a thermal neutron shielding and absorbing material that has excellent thermal neutron shielding and absorbing capability and also has improved mechanical properties, machinability, weldability, and the like, wherein the method comprises the steps of: crushing and sorting a boron compound and an aluminum alloy; ball milling and mixing boron compound powders and aluminum alloy powders; compacting the mixed powders; and vacuum sintering the compacted body, wherein the method further comprises the hot isostatic pressing of the sintered body.
