Provided is an endoscope, which has a reduced outer diameter of a lens barrel unit without deteriorating sensitivity, and which is capable of illuminating a subject with sufficient light. An objective lens (21) and an eyepiece lens (22) are disposed in a lens barrel unit (11), and a relay lens system (23) is disposed between the objective lens and the eyepiece lens. An image sensor (31) is disposed in a camera unit (12), and a coaxial illuminating unit (32) is disposed at the periphery of the image sensor. A focal position shift member (25) is disposed at a first image-forming position (L1) in the lens barrel unit (11). Light from the coaxial illuminating unit (32) forms an image at the image-forming position (L1), and is shifted to a position (L2) by means of the focal position shift member (25). Since the position (L2) is a closer position than the focal position, light passed through the objective lens (21) diffuses and illuminates a subject (51).
